Abstract

The paper discusses the economic relationship between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in the face of the Chinese economic slowdown and structural changes. China’s new growth scenario, based on less investment and more domestic demand brings challenges and opportunities for this relationship. It can represent a chance for a more “traditional South-South” relationship with a smaller trade deficit and less dependency on commodity exports for the Latin American and Caribbean region. The paper concludes that with the end of the commodities boom, the current economic relationship between CELAC members and China needs to change due the new growth perspectives of China. CELAC needs to take this into account and prepare an agenda that can foster this economic relationship and benefit of the opportunities that the deep economic changes in China will create.
