Abstract
Through the notion of narrative identity, Paul Ricoeur tries to
show how the relationship between identity and otherness implies a
dialectic between the own and the alien, present in all understanding. Emmanuel Levinas’s position rejects this conception of otherness. He considers the other as a limit of identity, not the condition of possibility. Thus, we analyze the response offered by Ricoeur in Oneself as Another concerning the status of the otherness of the other and its relation to the constitution of self identity.
