Abstract
By the end of 18th Century, the Spanish Empire inculcated terror by silencing the voices that rose in favor of the defenseless ones. Nowadays, when celebrating the Bicentennial of Independence, an exegetical-theological analysis of the joanic episode known as the pericope of the woman caught in adultery (Jn 7:53 – 8:11) is presented in this article. In this pericope, there is someone whom no one dares to defend: the woman surprised in adultery. Her prosecutors are ready to violently silence whoever dares to help her and for this reason she is brought into the presence of Jesus with the purpose of tending him a trap. The article is developed in four parts. In the first one, the existing problems for accepting the authenticity of the pericope are exposed and an answer is offered according to the principles of textual critic. The second part presents the structure of the text and the criteria by which this structure is established. The third part contains the exegesis of the text, according to the synchronical method of literary and narrative analysis. The conclusion offers a synthesis of the main theological elements that emerge from the exegetical analysis.
