Resumen

Este artículo busca definir y explicar la memoria autobiográfica desde un punto de vista funcional. Para esto, se analizan definiciones desde perspectivas cognitivas y socioculturales, resaltando su convergencia con relación a los componentes asumidos como constituyentes de la memoria autobiográfica y sus funciones atribuidas. La revisión de un modelo teórico sobre su funcionamiento permite comprender cómo los sistemas de memoria que la constituyen interactúan con procesos de control y esquemas culturales para generar recuerdos autobiográficos, esenciales para mantener una imagen coherente del individuo y un registro moderadamente exacto de las experiencias. Sus funciones son precisadas: autodefinición, interacción social y autorregulación. Se plantea que los recuerdos autobiográficos son multimodales, distribuidos entre sistemas de memoria y procesos ejecutivos, mediados por contextos socioculturales.
