Abstract

Introduction: TDC is an excessive concern for physical defects, which are generally not perceived by others. Thoughts about unpleasant body parts are perceived as intrusive and difficult to control. Purpose:  to present the historical dimension and evolution of the BDD classification and the relationship between cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms with other mental disorders. Method: a review of studies was carried out on the historical dimension, symptoms and comorbidities of body dysmorphic disorder, carried out between 2000 and 2020. PubMed, MedLine, Science Direct and Bibliomed databases and the descriptors were used. “body dysmorphic disorder” “symptom assessment” “comorbidity” in both English and Spanish. Results: BDD is associated with other mental disorders and symptoms such as suicidal ideation and attempts are present; Regarding age, an onset at 16 years is described, although symptoms can be detected around 12 or 13 years; some studies indicate that there are differences between men and women in relation to the part of the body on which the concerns fall. Conclusions: It is necessary to generate new knowledge about BDD in order to specify differential diagnoses.
